Aplicação do Copolímero RDP DA-1420 VAE

In cementitious tile adhesive production, the dry blend is cycled through a twin-shaft paddle mixer with a working fill of 70% to 80%; DA-1420 is metered after the cellulose ether and before the fine calcium carbonate to prevent electrostatically driven powder carryover into the dust extraction system. A total dry-mix time of 120 s is generally sufficient only when the mixer tip speed stays below 6 m/s; above this speed, the anti-caking layer on the VAE powder particles is partially abraded, and subsequent re-dispersion in water becomes uneven. The required application property is tensile adhesion on concrete slabs after defined conditioning. Under EN 1348, C2-class cementitious adhesives must retain at least 1.0 N/mm² after water immersion and after heat ageing; the initial adhesion after 28 d dry storage is measured with 50 mm steel pull-off dollies. Typical C2 formulations place the VAE RDP dosage between 2.5 wt% and 5.0 wt% of the dry mortar. The lower boundary is set by water-immersion adhesion loss, while the upper boundary is controlled by open time and slip resistance. Transverse deformation is evaluated under EN 12002:2008; S1 requires at least 2.5 mm and S2 requires 5.0 mm. Field observations from dry-mix plants with floor-level mixer discharge show that the final 50 kg of a 1,000 kg batch can segregate if the powder is added too late and the transfer screw runs above 40°C. The segregation appears later as soft white streaks after the adhesive is troweled with a 6 mm × 6 mm notched trowel. Because DA-1420 is a VAE copolymer RDP, its protective colloid is sensitive to pH above 13 in wet mortar and to prolonged high-shear mixing at the jobsite; a mixing time of 180 s with a heavy-duty drill mixer followed by 5 min maturation is the common release procedure. If site water volume exceeds the datasheet range by 5%, adhesive open time measured under EN 1346 can be shortened enough to fail C2E requirements in warm, dry weather. The powder is hygroscopic; storage at relative humidity above 60% or above 30°C can reduce redispersibility, so dry-mix plants with unheated silos should screen through a 500 µm sieve before metering. The supplier datasheet does not replace EN 1348 pull-off testing for this grade in C2E/S1 and C2E/S2 systems.

What Changes in ETICS Adhesives and Glass-Fibre Mesh Base Coats?

Exterior thermal insulation composite systems require a base coat in which the wet density and mesh-embedment behavior change when DA-1420 replaces a styrene-acrylate powder at the same polymer volume fraction. The dry mix is combined with water in a forced-action mixer until flow measured under EN 1015-3 reaches 130 mm to 150 mm; the fresh mortar is then applied over expanded polystyrene board and a 160 g/m² alkali-resistant glass fibre mesh is pressed into the first 2 mm layer. The redispersed VAE film must retain enough tensile strength after 28 d curing to meet the adhesion requirements of EAD 040083-00-0404; pull-off testing uses 50 mm plates and the required failure mode is cohesive within the EPS board. A production-scale bottleneck occurs when continuous screw conveyors overheat the powder above 35°C; the protective colloid on the VAE particle becomes tacky, reducing flow through the bagging spout and creating fines that later form lumps in the mixing water. On jobsites, base coat applied below 5°C does not coalesce into a uniform film; the mesh may remain visible after the topcoat cures. At the other extreme, application above 35°C with wind speed above 3 m/s skins over before the mesh can be embedded. Typical dosage in the adhesive and base coat is between 3.0 wt% and 5.0 wt%. The formulation must also pass freeze-thaw cycling and hygrothermal resistance sequences; if the powder dosage is reduced below 2.5 wt%, the base coat often shows premature cracking around window reveals after the first winter. Published data for DA-1420 in full EAD 040083-00-0404 submissions is limited; a complete ETICS adhesive and base coat test campaign is required.

At the wet processing stage of self-smoothing underlayments, DA-1420 is first dispersed into the gauging water with a high-speed disperser at 800 rpm for 30 s before the dry mortar is added; this sequence avoids the formation of starch-like lumps that appear when the powder and superplasticizer are dry-blended for longer than 180 s in a high-intensity mixer. The flow diameter is controlled under ASTM C1708-13; a release window of 240 mm to 260 mm is common for pumpable underlayments, but the exact value must be matched to the substrate absorption and pump hose length. Compressive strength is classified under EN 13813:2002; C20-class underlayments require at least 20 N/mm² at 28 d, while C30-class requires 30 N/mm² at 28 d. Adding DA-1420 at 4.0 wt% to 6.0 wt% increases flexural strength and adhesion but also increases air entrainment; above 6.0 wt%, the 1 d compressive strength can fall below the early traffic threshold commonly set at 15 N/mm² by flooring contractors. Production plants using ribbon blenders report that the powder should be introduced after the fine sand fraction has been coated with the polycarboxylate ether superplasticizer; if the order is reversed, the VAE powder forms agglomerates with the superplasticizer that survive the bagging screen and produce white spots after hydration. The water-to-solids ratio should be kept below 0.18 for most cement-based self-leveling compounds; above this value, solids segregation occurs and the cured surface develops a soft polymer-rich film that interferes with subsequent epoxy or polyurethane flooring bond. Independent test results under ASTM C1708-13 and EN 13813:2002 for DA-1420 are not widely disclosed; plant trials are required.

R4-Class Concrete Repair: Polymer Film Interpenetration at the Bond Line

Concrete repair mortars targeting R4 class under EN 1504-3:2005 must simultaneously achieve minimum 45 N/mm² compressive strength at 28 d and minimum 2.0 N/mm² pull-off adhesion to a prepared concrete substrate under EN 1542. DA-1420 modifies the failure mode by forming a low-modulus polymer film at the aggregate-cement paste interface; the film reduces the stress concentration that otherwise initiates shrinkage cracks along the repair boundary. The dosage is normally capped at 4.0 wt% because the polymer film reduces compressive strength; above 4.0 wt%, the mortar may fail the R4 threshold unless the water-to-cement ratio is reduced below 0.40 and a high-range polycarboxylate superplasticizer is used to maintain workability. Field experience with high-speed dissolver mixers shows that mixing DA-1420 above 1,200 rpm into a slurry already accelerated with calcium formate generates a stable foam that remains as pinholes after trowel finishing. Amine-based additives should not be added at the dry-mix stage because the released ammonia can destabilize the protective colloid on the redispersible VAE powder and reduce re-dispersibility. For repair mortars used in chloride-contaminated concrete, the formulator must also verify the chloride ion content restriction in EN 1504-3:2005; the polymer powder itself is not a significant chloride source but the aggregate and calcium chloride-free accelerators must be selected accordingly. Published data for DA-1420 in R4 repair systems is scarce; each new powder lot must be qualified by EN 1542 pull-off after 28 d plus freeze-thaw cycling according to EN 13687-1 if the repair is exposed to de-icing salts.

Because gypsum joint compounds are typically sanded within 24 h after application, the DA-1420 dosage in a low-binder formulation must balance surface hardness with abrasive sanding resistance. In a formulation with less than 8 wt% total organic binder, the powder is dry-blended after perlite and before fine calcium carbonate to protect the low-density aggregate from mechanical fracture in a ribbon blender. The water demand is fixed by the workability test in ASTM C474-19; a water-to-solids ratio above 0.45 causes the joint compound to slump on vertical board joints, while a ratio below 0.38 produces tearing during trowel application. DA-1420 forms a continuous film that bridges microcracks at the board joint after drying; below 1.5 wt%, crack resistance under ASTM C475-19 is typically insufficient once the joint is subjected to building movement. Above 3.5 wt%, the cured film can become tacky under high-humidity conditions above 70% RH, causing sandpaper clogging and a lower production rate for finishing crews. When starch ether is used in the same compound, the addition sequence is critical: starch ether at 0.5 wt% or higher competes with the VAE powder for water and can produce a false-thick appearance in the first 60 s of mixing, followed by sudden viscosity loss. No public data set for DA-1420 in gypsum joint compounds is available; internal 24 h bond, crack resistance, and sanding time checks under ASTM C474-19 are required on actual gypsum board rather than on glass plates.

When Low-Sheen Wall Skim Coats Are Preconditioned by Powder Addition Sequence

Cementitious wall skim coats formulated for flat paint acceptance depend on the order of powder addition in the dry-mix plant to control the distribution of DA-1420 on the cement particles. The powder is introduced after the air-entraining control agent but before the titanium dioxide or barium sulfate filler; a reverse sequence produces dark streaks after sanding. The skim coat is applied in a thin layer of 1 mm to 2 mm; the white surface is evaluated for polishability and for water absorption under EN 1062-3. At a dosage of 2.5 wt% to 4.0 wt%, the polymer film reduces the surface water absorption coefficient below 0.1 kg/m²·h^0.5 for many cement-based substrates, but this value must be confirmed for the specific substrate because the absorption class depends on the primer. Above 4.0 wt%, the skim coat may show early rain streaking if the surface is exposed within 72 h; below 2.0 wt%, the hardened surface dusts after sanding and shows poor paint hold-out. Production-scale pin mixers running at 1,000 rpm can cause powder fusing on the mixer wall if the water is added before the powder in cold weather below 10°C. Because public data for DA-1420 in wall skim coats is limited to supplier datasheets, batch release must rely on EN 1062-3 water absorption measurements and a 24 h surface hardness comparison against an internal reference.

Evaluate Crack-Bridging Retention Through EN 14891 Before Waterproofing Grade Release

Before a two-component flexible cementitious waterproofing slurry is released for production, the DA-1420-containing powder component must be mixed with the liquid polymer dispersion and cured as a 2 mm film over a defined static crack opening under EN 14891. The release test is crack bridging at 0°C after water immersion. The dry powder component is usually compounded at 15 wt% to 30 wt% DA-1420 of total dry mix because the waterproofing membrane must form a polymer-continuous film rather than a cement-continuous matrix. On green concrete with surface pH above 13, coalescence is slower; the membrane may remain water-swollen and lose crack-bridging capacity if the substrate has residual moisture above 8 wt%. The mixing protocol uses a heavy-duty paddle mixer at 600 rpm to 900 rpm; above 1,500 rpm, air entrainment rises sharply and the cured membrane develops pinholes that fail the water impermeability test under EN 14891. At a thickness of 2 mm, the membrane should be applied in two passes: the first pass fills the crack, and the second pass embeds a 40 g/m² to 80 g/m² reinforcing nonwoven when crack movement is expected. Published data for DA-1420 in EN 14891 crack-bridging submissions is limited; the grade must be re-qualified for each new lot by a complete crack-bridging sequence after water immersion, not by viscosity or film appearance alone.
