Dairen DA-101 is a vinyl acetate–ethylene (VAE) copolymer emulsion formulated at a nominal solids content of 55–57 wt%, stabilized with a polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH) protective colloid system, and delivered at a Brookfield viscosity of 800–2,000 mPa·s (25 °C, spindle 4, 20 rpm). The dispersion exhibits a pH of 4.0–5.5, an average particle size in the range 0.8–1.5 µm, and a glass transition temperature (Tg) near 0 °C by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC, 10 K/min). Its minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT) is consistently measured at ≤ 2 °C per ISO 2115, enabling film coalescence without external plasticizer at ambient shop-floor conditions. Unlike conventional polyvinyl acetate homopolymer dispersions that demand high plasticizer loadings to achieve flexibility, DA-101 derives permanent elongation from internal ethylene units, eliminating plasticizer migration and the associated loss of bond strength over decades of service. The combination of high bound-ethylene content, colloidal stability against shear and multivalent ions, and a self-thickening rheology profile positions DA-101 as a workhorse binder for water-based adhesives, construction compounds, and textile back-coatings where long open time and substrate wet-out are essential.

What distinguishes DA-101 from plasticized PVAc and high-Tg VAE grades?

In accelerated aging trials following ASTM D3632-98, plasticized PVAc adhesives routinely lose 40–60% of initial peel strength within 1,000 h at 70 °C as low-molecular-weight plasticizer exudes into the substrate or outgasses. DA-101, being internally plasticized, retains ≥ 85% of its original 180° peel adhesion to treated polyethylene after the same exposure, provided the film is fully coalesced and equilibrated at 50% RH. This permanent-flexibility mechanism is critical for pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes intended for under-hood automotive harness wraps and for bookbinding adhesives that must survive repeated flexure without becoming brittle.

Compared with higher-Tg VAE emulsions such as Dairen DA-102 (Tg ~15 °C) or certain styrene-acrylic hybrids, DA-101 delivers a wet-tack and open-time advantage that can eliminate the need for co-solvent or humectant addition. Reverse gravure coating trials on a 300 m/min laminating line (Kroenert PAK 630, 1,200 mm web width) demonstrated that replacing a 15 °C-Tg VAE with DA-101 reduced required nip pressure by 0.8 bar while maintaining peel adhesion above 3.5 N/cm on corona-treated LDPE. The penalty is a lower cohesive strength at 80 °C; shear adhesion failure temperature (SAFT, 1 kg static load, 0.5 °C/min ramp) typically falls in the 70–85 °C range, which is 15–25 °C below that obtainable with grades having a Tg above 10 °C. Therefore, DA-101 is assigned to applications where ambient and service temperatures do not exceed 60 °C for sustained periods under load.

Batch release is performed against a manufacturing control plan that monitors residual vinyl acetate monomer at ≤ 500 ppm (GC headspace, ISO 6401) and free formaldehyde below 10 ppm. Compliance with EU Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) and the U.S. EPA TSCA inventory is documented on the certificate of analysis.

Filtration through a 40 µm bag filter prior to drumming removes incidental skin agglomerates, achieving a grit content of ≤ 50 mg/kg on a 63 µm sieve (ISO 4576). On full-scale SMC (sheet moulding compound) carrier-web coating lines operating with a comma blade gap of 0.8 mm, this grit specification prevented streaking defects at line speeds up to 18 m/min, compared with a 3.2% reject rate when a coarser 0.3–2.5 µm particle size PVAc was substituted.

The PVOH colloid system introduces a pseudoplastic flow profile; the shear-thinning index (viscosity ratio at 2 rpm vs. 20 rpm) typically falls between 2.5 and 3.8. This property permits spray application with airless equipment (Graco Merkur, 30:1 ratio, 0.015–0.019 inch tip) without misting, while providing sufficient low-shear viscosity for vertical hang resistance on porous concrete.

    When low-temperature flexibility becomes design-critical

DA-101 films, cast at 150 µm wet thickness and conditioned at 23 °C/50% RH for 7 days, exhibit elongation at break exceeding 600% (ISO 527-3, type 5 specimens, 200 mm/min). At −10 °C, elongation remains above 200% without plasticizer, a property unattainable with typical EVA hotmelts that brittle below −5 °C. This cold-flex profile is exploited in sprayable waterproofing membranes for foundation walls subjected to freeze–thaw cycling. In laboratory cyclic testing (ASTM C836-18, 50 cycles between −18 °C and +25 °C), a 2.5 mm thick DA-101/sand-filled membrane on primed concrete showed no adhesion loss measured by pull-off testing (ASTM C1583-13, 50 mm dollies), retaining 1.2–1.6 MPa tensile adhesion throughout the test sequence. The internal ethylene segments also contribute to water-vapor permeability below 15 perms (ASTM E96, Procedure A), which prevents blistering in dually adhered vapor-barrier configurations.

The same cold-flex character is leveraged in adhesive transfer tapes for splicing low-surface-energy films. If the formulation is loaded with 35–45 phr of a rosin ester dispersion (acid number 8–15 mg KOH/g), the resulting PSA exhibits loop tack of 12–18 N/25 mm on untreated polypropylene (FINAT FTM 9) and a static shear holding time of > 200 h at 23 °C, 1 kg. However, an upper tackifier loading boundary is encountered at 50 phr, beyond which the shear holding time collapses to < 20 h due to polymer–tackifier phase inversion observable under AFM phase imaging. Compounding therefore demands a rheological step-test protocol to identify the exact percolation threshold on each new lot of resin ester.

Carpet backing and textile lamination: high-speed line constraints

In pre-coat formulations for tufted carpet, DA-101 is applied at 1,200–1,800 g/m2 wet add-on using a lick-roll applicator followed by a pin tenter frame operating at 15–25 m/min. Upstream of the oven, the coat weight uniformity is directly governed by the emulsion’s low-shear viscosity. Because DA-101 develops an instantaneous viscosity of 15–25 Pa·s at 0.1 s−1 (plate-plate rheometer, 1 mm gap), it resists strike-through into the primary backing fabric yet levels sufficiently to encapsulate latex tuft binders. During peak summer operations in uninsulated plants where emulsion tank temperatures rise to 38–40 °C, the viscosity drops by 30–40%, potentially accelerating strike-through and resulting in a hard carpet hand. Process correction typically requires cooling the storage vessel to ≤ 30 °C or blending with a 2–5% addition of a high-viscosity VAE grade (e.g., DA-103) to restore the target Newtonian plateau.

Post-cure, the laminated composite must pass the ASTM D3936 tuft bind test. With a calcium carbonate filler loading of 200–250 phr per 100 parts of wet emulsion, tuft bind values routinely exceed 45 N for a 3/8-gauge cut-pile construction, provided the oven profile drives the web surface to 140–150 °C for at least 90 s to volatilize all water. Incomplete drying, evidenced by residual moisture above 0.5%, leads to interfacial delamination under the standard cyclic humidity exposure of AATCC TM172.

Where the carpet line changes to a synthetic secondary backing lamination, DA-101 is crosslinked with 0.5–1.5 wt% (on dry binder) of a blocked isocyanate or ammonium zirconium carbonate (AZC) to impart wet strength. Bench-top immersion tests (72 h, deionized water at 25 °C) on laminates crosslinked at 130 °C peak-metal temperature show a wet peel retention of 65–80% relative to dry peel. Bumping the crosslinker dosage to 2.5% reduces wet peel, an effect attributed to over-crosslinking embrittlement of the VAE interfacial film.

Formulation latitude with fillers, rheology modifiers, and co-binders

DA-101 accepts calcium carbonate loadings up to 400 phr without grit formation, owing to the protective colloid’s tolerance for divalent Ca2+ ions. High-loading mastics for ceramic tile installation formulated to ANSI A118.4 exhibit slump resistance of ≤ 1 mm when tested per ASTM C627 after a 24‑h set, with no need for cellulose ether addition beyond 0.3%. However, if the compound is stored beyond 6 months in a partially filled container, the headspace ammonia generated by trace decomposition of the PVOH stabilizer can elevate the compound pH to 7–8, triggering a step increase in viscosity as the colloid contracts. This storage artifact is not observed in homopolymer systems or in VAE grades stabilized with anionic surfactants, marking a distinction relevant for long-shelf-life retail products.

Co-binder blends with styrene-butadiene (SB) latex exhibit a biphasic film morphology; a 70:30 (w/w dry) DA-101:SB ratio yields a continuous VAE phase with dispersed SB domains, imparting tensile strength of 4–6 MPa and a water absorption of 10–15% after 24 h immersion (ISO 62). Flipping the ratio to 30:70 results in a phase inversion that raises water absorption to 30–40%, a phenomenon confirmed by dynamic mechanical analysis showing a sharp drop in storage modulus above 40 °C. Such data are essential when targeting outdoor construction adhesives where rainwater contact is intermittent but prolonged.

In high-speed wood-to-wood assembly, DA-101 serves as a base for D3-class (EN 204) water-resistant adhesives. A compound containing 100 phr DA-101, 10 phr glycerol triacetate as workability aid, and 2 phr ammonium chloride catalyst (for UF resin crosslinking) achieves a wet shear strength of 5.8 MPa after 4 h of boiling-water soak and subsequent shear testing per ISO 17178. The required open time exceeds 20 min on beech wood at 23 °C/50% RH, making it suitable for manual panel lay-up where a longer positioning window is needed. Automatic spreader lines (e.g., Barberán SP-510) operating at 60 m/min with a knurled roller application show no pre-cure skinning within the roller trough, attributable to the high surface tension and non-film-forming character of DA-101 when wet thickness exceeds 50 µm.

Published data for DA-101 in UV-curable hybrid systems are limited; however, as a coalesced film it can be overcoated with UV-cure clearcoats provided the base film is dried to ≤ 1% residual moisture and the UV formulation does not contain strong organic acids that could protonate the acetate groups, causing catalytic hydrolysis. In any wet-on-wet operation with polyurethane dispersions, verification of pH compatibility is mandatory, because the acidic pH of DA-101 (4.0–5.5) can prematurely coagulate certain anionically stabilized PUDs, especially those based on sulfonate groups with narrow pH tolerance windows.

The decision to specify DA-101 over other VAE or hybrid emulsions often pivots on the balance between processing rheology, permanent flexibility, and compliance with low-emission building standards. When a low-Tg, internally plasticized binder that can pass EN 13999 or CDPH/EHLB Standard Method v1.2 is required, DA-101 provides a predictable baseline without the formulation complexity of co-solvent plasticization. Its limitations—modest thermal shear resistance, sensitivity to high-pH post-adds, and relatively low shear adhesion at elevated temperatures—must be mapped against the service temperature envelope of the final assembly. In applications where sustained load at > 60 °C is anticipated, a higher-Tg VAE or a crosslinkable acrylic is indicated, while for ambient-cure, flexure-tolerant, and low-odor adhesive and coating systems, DA-101 aligns tightly with the performance-cost-compliance triangle targeted by industrial formulators.
