    Mais Introdução

Shuangxin 05-88 PVA, also designated PVA 088-05, is a partially hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol with a nominal 4% aqueous solution viscosity of 5.0 mPa·s at 20 °C and a nominal alcoholysis degree of 88.0 mol%. Commercial certificates of analysis for this grade commonly list a viscosity range of 4.5–5.5 mPa·s measured by rotational viscometer and an alcoholysis degree range of 87.0–89.0 mol% by alkali titration. The material is supplied as a white to off-white granular powder with volatile matter typically at or below 5.0 wt%, ash at or below 0.5 wt%, and a 4% solution pH between 5.0 and 7.0. The product is used where low solution viscosity, cold-water dispersibility, and controlled interfacial activity are required. Unlike 17-88 and 20-88 grades, the 05-88 molecular weight is lower; unlike fully hydrolysed 05-99, its residual acetate content suppresses crystallinity and permits cold-water film break-up.

Which Standardised Test Methods Govern the Declared Viscosity and Hydrolysis Limits?

Batch release testing for PVA 088-05 commonly follows JIS K6726:1994 or equivalent Chinese national standard GB/T 12010 series procedures. The 4% solution viscosity is determined after complete dissolution in deionised water at 20 °C using a Brookfield rotational viscometer. Spindle and speed are selected to remain within the instrument torque band, with a No. 1 spindle at 30 rpm being a common starting condition. Alcoholysis degree is determined by back-titration of residual acetate groups after saponification, expressed as mol% vinyl alcohol units. Volatile matter is determined by forced-air oven drying to constant mass at 105 °C; ash content is determined by muffle furnace ignition at 750 °C. These are typical release parameters, not specification limits for all production lots unless stated on the supplier’s certificate of analysis.

In emulsion polymerisation of vinyl acetate and vinyl acetate–ethylene copolymers, Shuangxin 05-88 PVA functions as a protective colloid at addition levels typically between 2.0 wt% and 5.0 wt% on total monomer. Because its low molecular weight reduces aqueous-phase viscosity relative to 17-88 or 20-88 grades, the product is suited to semi-batch reactors with high-shear impellers, where excessive continuous-phase viscosity can cause heat-transfer loss at the jacket wall and local hot spots. The 88 mol% hydrolysis level provides sufficient acetate groups for graft reaction with vinyl acetate during particle nucleation; this grafting contributes steric and electrostatic stability after particle formation. Reactor charging with a 4–8% aqueous stock solution at 25–40 °C is common. The primary process conflict is over-grafting when the product is used above 5.0 wt% on monomer or when reactor temperature exceeds 80 °C, leading to viscosity drift and filter plugging in the final emulsion. Published data for this specific grade under continuous loop polymerisation are limited; most available references describe batch and semi-batch stirred-tank operation.

When High-Speed Adhesive Compounding Demands a Lower-Viscosity Partial Hydrolysate

Polyvinyl acetate wood and packaging adhesives formulated with Shuangxin 05-88 PVA as the sole protective colloid can be processed in top-entering high-shear dispersers operating at tip speeds from 10 m/s to 20 m/s. The low molar mass of the 05-88 grade permits rapid hydration without pre-gelling, but the same property narrows the thickening response relative to 17-88 or 20-88. At 10% solids, a 05-88 solution typically yields a Brookfield viscosity below 100 mPa·s, whereas a 17-88 solution can exceed 300 mPa·s under identical spindle and temperature conditions. This difference allows formulators to increase polymer loading while maintaining pumpable viscosity. However, the low viscosity also reduces wet tack slope, so plasticiser and filler loadings require adjustment when replacing a medium-viscosity grade.

Textile warp sizing with 05-88 PVA is performed on single-size-box slashers at size-box temperatures of 80–90 °C and squeeze roll pressures of 10–20 kN/m. The low viscosity allows size penetration into high-twist cotton and polyester–cotton yarns at solids of 6–9%. Compared with starch-only formulations, PVA addition improves abrasion resistance; desizing is accomplished with hot water at 60–80 °C or with oxidative desizing agents. The film formed from 05-88 is softer and less crystalline than that of fully hydrolysed 05-99, reducing size shedding at loom speeds above 600 picks/min. Published data for exact loom efficiency improvements with this specific grade are limited, because the grade is frequently blended with starch to reduce formulation cost.

Water-Soluble Film Casting and the 05-88 Molecular Weight Window

Solution-cast water-soluble films using 05-88 PVA are typically formulated at 12–18% solids in deionised water, with plasticiser content of 10–20 phr based on dry polymer. Glycerol, sorbitol, or trimethylolpropane are common plasticisers. Film casting is carried out on chrome-plated drum dryers or steel belt conveyors with drying air at 90–110 °C. The low viscosity of 05-88 reduces air entrainment in the doctored film, which lowers pinholing tendency. Tensile properties measured according to ASTM D882-18 on 50 µm cast film typically show lower tensile strength and higher elongation than films produced from 17-88 or 20-88 because of lower chain entanglement density. The 88 mol% hydrolysis level also gives cold-water solubility above 10 °C, whereas a fully hydrolysed grade requires water temperatures above 60 °C for complete dissolution. This solubility threshold defines the product’s suitability for water-soluble sachet films used in cool-water applications.

Borate-containing aqueous systems are a defined operational boundary for 05-88 PVA. Dissolved borate ions form didiol complexes with the 1,3-diol sequences in partially hydrolysed PVA, producing a reversible gel network. Even 0.1–0.5 wt% borax based on polymer can raise low-shear viscosity by orders of magnitude or cause localised gel particles in static mixers. Equipment with low-shear blending zones, such as progressive cavity pumps and plate-and-frame filtration, may accumulate gel deposits when borate is added without high-shear injection. Aldehyde donors and strong acids can reduce water solubility by acetal formation at the 1,3-diol sites; this reaction is accelerated above 50 °C and at pH below 3.0. For these reasons, the product is not recommended for crosslinked water-resistant films unless borate or aldehyde crosslinkers are deliberately metered in-line under controlled pH and shear.

The 88 mol% Hydrolysis Point as a Solubility and Crystallinity Boundary

The 88 mol% alcoholysis degree places Shuangxin 05-88 PVA near the transition between cold-water-soluble and hot-water-soluble polyvinyl alcohols. Residual acetate groups at 12 mol% interrupt interchain hydrogen bonding, suppressing crystallite growth and lowering the dissolution temperature. Solution-cast films therefore hydrate and dissolve in water at or slightly above 10 °C, depending on plasticiser type and thermal history. Fully hydrolysed grades, with hydrolysis above 98 mol%, require dissolution temperatures above 60 °C and form more rigid films with higher tensile modulus. Lower-hydrolysis grades may dissolve at lower temperature but exhibit reduced film cohesive strength and greater sensitivity to high-humidity blocking. The 05-88 grade occupies an intermediate position: sufficient water resistance for temporary protective films, yet cold-water dispersibility for emulsion and sizing processes. The exact dissolution curve measured by turbidimetry is batch-sensitive; release testing should include a cloud point or gel temperature check if the downstream process operates below 20 °C.

Paper surface sizing at the size press uses 05-88 PVA at 2–4% solution concentration, with pick-up controlled by nip pressure of 20–40 kN/m and machine speed. The low viscosity improves penetration into the sheet and provides oil resistance and surface strength. Surface strength measured by IGT pick testing can be improved, but published data for this specific product in single-pass size press operation are limited. The grade is commonly blended with oxidised starch to control rheology and reduce sizing cost.

Storage of Shuangxin 05-88 PVA in warm, humid environments requires moisture control because the polymer is hygroscopic and its powder flow properties degrade as moisture content rises above 5.0 wt%. In production-scale silo systems, dry-air conveying at a dew point below -20 °C is used to prevent clumping. If bags are opened at ambient relative humidity above 60%, pre-drying in a vacuum dryer at 60–80 °C for 2–4 h may be required before extrusion or dry blending. Rotary-vane feeders and single-screw volumetric units with narrow clearances can develop feed instability if the product absorbs surface moisture. Dust formation during material transfer is controlled by local exhaust ventilation; organic dust clouds from PVA powder require grounding and inert gas blanketing where a site dust hazard analysis identifies concentrations above the applicable lower explosive limit.
