    Aplicação de GOHSENOL AL-06R

GOHSENOL AL-06R is a partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol powder with a nominal 4% aqueous solution viscosity of 5.0–7.0 mPa·s at 20°C, a degree of hydrolysis of 86.0–89.0 mol%, volatile content not exceeding 5.0 wt%, and ash not exceeding 0.3 wt%. Because the grade combines low solution viscosity with residual acetyl functionality, its downstream applications concentrate in waterborne systems where film formation, protective colloid efficiency, and controlled water sensitivity are processing constraints rather than in fully hydrolysed high-DP barrier film applications.

How Does AL-06R Maintain Colloidal Stability During Semi-Continuous Vinyl Acetate Copolymerisation?

In vinyl acetate homopolymer and vinyl acetate–ethylene emulsion reactors, partially saponified PVOH with a 4% solution viscosity in the 5.0–7.0 mPa·s range operates as a protective colloid by adsorbing at the monomer-swollen polymer particle surface and forming a steric barrier that suppresses coalescence during the 70–80°C reaction plateau. The 86.0–89.0 mol% hydrolysis window leaves sufficient residual acetyl groups to reduce water sensitivity of the dried film, while the low molecular weight prevents reactor Brookfield viscosity from exceeding 2,500–4,000 mPa·s during the final 55–60 wt% solids phase. The continuous phase is prepared by charging demineralised water to a jacketed stainless reactor, dispersing AL-06R at 10–15 wt%, and holding the solution at 85–90°C for 30–40 min under a low-shear anchor impeller rotating at 40–60 rpm. Heating above 95°C or exceeding 60 min has been observed on production lines to deepen solution colour and reduce protective-colloid efficiency in the subsequent polymerisation.

Formulation addition rates for AL-06R are 1.0–4.0 wt% based on total monomer mass, with homopolymeric vinyl acetate wood-adhesive emulsions at 1.5–2.5 wt% and high-solids VAE formulations at 3.0–4.0 wt%. The initiator package is typically potassium persulfate at 0.10–0.30 wt% on total monomer, fed as a 3–5 wt% aqueous solution in parallel with the monomer stream over 3.5–5.0 h; redox chase using tert-butyl hydroperoxide and sodium formaldehyde sulfoxylate at 0.03–0.06 wt% each lowers residual vinyl acetate below 0.1 wt%. Nitrogen sparging should maintain dissolved oxygen below 10 ppm before initiation, since oxygen inhibition extends induction time and widens particle size distribution in the 150–350 nm range. Full-scale equipment includes an agitator with impeller-to-tank diameter ratio of 0.45–0.55 and a 100 μm in-line filter on the PVOH feed to prevent undissolved granules from entering the reactor and causing localised gel specks.

Emulsions produced with AL-06R are tested for downstream food-contact adhesive and paper-laminating uses under FDA 21 CFR 175.105, FDA 21 CFR 176.170, and FDA 21 CFR 176.180. In the European Union, the grade falls under REACH registration obligations as a polymer constituent; the finished PVAc/VAE dispersion is commonly tested for free monomer using ISO 13741-1:2023 and for residual persulfate by iodometric titration, with upper limits set by specific food-contact declarations rather than the polymer grade itself. Terminal product types include D3 and D4 wood adhesives tested to EN 204/205, paper lamination adhesives, interior architectural paints with a PVC of 45–65%, and nonwoven binders applied by foam or spray. At addition levels above 4.5 wt%, high-shear recirculation through a 250 μm gap can generate creaming; published data for this specific configuration is limited, so pilot reactor evaluation with the intended monomer feed profile is required before scaling.

During blade metering of pigmented coating colours at speeds above 1,200 m/min, binder migration and water loss into the base sheet create a viscosity surge in the coating pan that changes coat-weight uniformity. In this paper coating application, 0.7–1.5 pph dry pigment of AL-06R is added as a co-binder alongside a carboxylated styrene-butadiene latex at 8–12 pph; the PVOH fraction preferentially associates with clay edges and ultrafine ground calcium carbonate, reduces binder migration under the blade, and maintains water retention without raising the low-shear Brookfield viscosity above 1,200–1,600 mPa·s at 100 rpm and 25°C. Coating colour solids are typically 58–66 wt%, with pH adjusted to 8.5–9.5 using sodium hydroxide. The AL-06R solution is prepared separately at 10–15 wt% and added after the latex to avoid shock destabilisation, because the partially hydrolysed grade has a lower protective-colloid demand than fully hydrolysed PVOH and does not generate excessive thickening when the colour is recirculated through a 75 μm screen.

On a blade coater, the drying section uses gas-fired air foils with web surface temperatures of 90–130°C; residual moisture at the reel should be controlled at 4.0–6.5 wt%. Increasing AL-06R above 2.0 pph increases blade scratching at coat weights below 8 g/m² and may produce wet-end foam in broke repulping. Compliance for coated board in food-contact packaging is governed by FDA 21 CFR 176.170 and 176.180, with migration testing under the aqueous and fatty food protocols of those sections; EU market access requires compliance with Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and applicable national measures such as BfR Recommendation XXXVI for paper and board. Measured paper properties include brightness to ISO 2470-1:2016, gloss to ISO 8254-1:2009, and surface strength using ISO 3783:2014 IGT pick velocity, with the PVOH co-binder fraction typically raising IGT values by 0.4–0.8 m/s relative to a latex-only control on coated fine paper. Terminal product types include triple-coated art paper, packaging board for bakery and confectionery cartons, thermal paper base, and inkjet matte paper treated with a silica–PVOH receiving layer.

Paper Converting Adhesives and Remoistening Kinetics At 35–55% RH

Remoistenable adhesive systems for envelope flaps, box overwrap, and label stock rely on a water-soluble film that can be dried to a tack-free state and re-activated by a short water kiss applicator on high-speed converting equipment. AL-06R is dissolved at 8–15 wt% solids in demineralised water, with glycerol or sorbitol plasticiser at 8–15% of PVOH solids, defoamer at 0.05–0.2 wt%, and a preservative registered for paper adhesives at 0.1–0.3 wt%. The resulting adhesive has a viscosity of 1,000–4,000 mPa·s at 25°C; for gravure application a lower solids range of 8–10 wt% is used to maintain 300–800 mPa·s in the pan. Dry coat weight on the paper substrate is 3–8 g/m², applied by roller or reverse gravure cylinder at line speeds of 150–300 m/min, followed by a tunnel dryer at 70–100°C with residence time of 5–15 s. Moisture content of the coated substrate is held at 4–6 wt%; below 35% RH remoistening time on litho-coated paper can exceed 2.5 s, which is a known failure mode on envelope lines running at 600–1,000 units/min. Above 55% RH, blocking can occur in stacks after 24–48 h at 40°C unless the plasticiser content is kept below 15%. Compliance testing for food-contact applications is conducted under FDA 21 CFR 175.105; the converting plant applies GHS labelling and REACH substance communication for the prepared mixture. Terminal products include remoistenable envelope strips, paper tapes, coupon labels, and box overwrap seals.

When AL-06R Is Cast as a Secondary Film Former for Laundry Unit-Dose Pouches

Laundry and dishwasher unit-dose films require a PVOH film that dissolves completely in cold wash water at 20–30°C while retaining enough thermoforming stretch to survive cavity depths of 15–25 mm during vertical form-fill-seal. In this process, AL-06R is not used as the sole film former; it is blended at 10–30 wt% of total PVOH solids with a higher degree-of-polymerisation partially hydrolysed grade to reduce the viscosity of the casting solution and improve deaeration. The total casting solids are 18–25 wt%, with glycerol or sorbitol at 10–20 phr on dry PVOH, surfactant at 0.5–1.5 phr, and anti-block filler at 1–3 phr. The solution is slot-die coated onto a polished stainless steel belt or polyester carrier at 80–110°C staged drying; residual film moisture is 8–12 wt%.

Film tensile properties are tested to ASTM D882-18 Method A; AL-06R alone typically yields films with tensile strength lower than 25 MPa, which is below the pouch-integrity requirement for many automated detergent lines. The processing conflict is that increasing AL-06R content lowers casting viscosity and reduces pinholes during thermoforming, but above 20 wt% it also reduces seal-jaw weld strength unless seal temperature is raised to 140–170°C. Thermoforming on vertical form-fill-seal equipment occurs at 100–120°C with 0.2–0.5 s residence time, and forming pinholes are monitored at cavity corners where stretch ratios exceed 2.5:1.

Compliance for the finished pouch is assessed under EU Regulation (EC) No 648/2004 for detergent products, including solubility and biodegradability screening; the PVOH film should meet an OECD 301B ready biodegradability threshold above 60% in 28 days, but the specific pass/fail depends on the complete film formulation. Terminal product types include laundry unit-dose pouches for liquid detergents, dishwasher detergent capsules, and water-soluble sachets for pre-dosed agrochemicals. Published data for this exact blend configuration is limited; pouch producers should qualify the film on their own sealing and thermoforming equipment before full commercial conversion.

In dry-pressed alumina and barium titanate multilayer ceramic capacitor production, temporary binder burnout begins at 250°C and must be complete before 500°C to avoid carbon residue in the fired dielectric. AL-06R is introduced at 0.5–2.0 wt% based on dry ceramic powder as a 10 wt% aqueous solution, together with a polycarboxylate dispersant at 0.2–0.5 wt% and a polyol plasticiser at 0.3–1.0 wt%. The slurry is mixed in a ball mill or high-shear disperser with zirconia media for 4–8 h to achieve a median particle size of 0.5–1.5 μm, then spray-dried at an inlet temperature of 210–230°C and outlet temperature of 100–120°C to produce free-flowing granules with residual moisture of 1.0–2.0 wt%. The low-solution viscosity of AL-06R allows spray-dried granule density to be adjusted without increasing slurry viscosity above 500–1,000 mPa·s at 25°C, which is critical for pumping through 0.8–1.2 mm spray nozzles.

The granulated powder is uniaxially pressed at 80–150 MPa in hydraulic presses equipped with a vacuum deaeration system, yielding green density of 55–60% of theoretical for alumina. Debinding is carried out in a continuous tunnel kiln with ramp rate of 0.5–2.0°C/min from 250°C to 500°C, followed by sintering at 1,500–1,600°C for alumina and 1,150–1,250°C for barium titanate. Residual ash from the AL-06R grade is nominally below 0.3 wt%; if unfiltered solution contains gel particles above 50 μm, sintered parts may exhibit surface craters after firing. The relevant compliance boundary for electronic ceramic powders is the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU for lead-free final components, plus IATF 16949 process controls for automotive ceramic capacitors; for food-contact ceramic tableware, firing must satisfy ISO 6486-1:2019 lead and cadmium release limits. Terminal product types include alumina electronic substrates, multilayer ceramic capacitors, ferrite cores, and precision ceramic surgical blades.

Low-Viscosity PVOH in Slasher Size Mixes: Squeeze Roll Pick-Up and Moisture Retention

Warp sizing of polyester/cotton blend yarns at slasher speeds of 60–120 m/min demands a size liquor viscosity low enough to penetrate the yarn core but high enough to hold add-on at 8–12% dry pick-up. AL-06R is combined in the size mix at 40–60% of dry solids with oxidised starch at 30–50%, acrylic size at 5–10%, and a wax lubricant at 0.5–1.0%; the total size mix solids are 8–14 wt%. The PVOH fraction is pre-dissolved at 10–15 wt% and added to the starch size after cooking at 95°C for 30 min; the completed mix is held at 85–90°C in the size box. Viscosity at the size box is controlled at 300–800 mPa·s by adjusting the AL-06R-to-starch ratio, with squeeze roll pressure at 10–20 kN/m to regulate wet pick-up from 65–80%. Drying cylinder temperatures are staged from 110°C at the wet end to 130–140°C at the dry end, with final yarn moisture at 2.0–3.5 wt%. Yarn tensile and abrasion testing is carried out to ASTM D2256/D2256M-21 and ISO 12947-2:2016; the sizing operation itself is governed by the textile mill’s ZDHC wastewater protocol because desizing effluent contains PVOH and starch with elevated chemical oxygen demand. When the fabric is exported with no intended food-contact use, the main regulatory boundary is REACH article compliance and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 if the final garment is certified. Terminal product types include cotton/polyester shirting, workwear, and pocketing fabrics woven on air-jet looms at 500–1,000 rpm. If the size mix temperature falls below 75°C, the AL-06R-containing film-forming component undergoes viscosity drift that increases size-box level variation and can produce hard size on the yarn sheet.
