GOHSENOL GL-05 is a partially saponified polyvinyl alcohol resin supplied by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation as white to pale-yellow granules. The grade is defined by a 4 wt% aqueous solution viscosity of 4.8–5.8 mPa·s at 20 °C and a degree of hydrolysis of 86.5–89.0 mol%, both determined according to JIS K6726. The corresponding residual acetyl content is approximately 11.0–13.5 mol%. This residual acetate content disrupts interchain hydrogen bonding more than fully saponified grades, reducing crystallinity and allowing cold-water solubility. Compounding-grade limits commonly include volatile matter at or below 5.0 wt%, ash content at or below 0.5 wt% as Na₂O, and a 4% aqueous solution pH of 5.0–7.0. Because the 4% solution viscosity is relatively low, GL-05 occupies the middle position between GOHSENOL GL-03 and GL-08 within the partially hydrolysed product series. The main application areas include vinyl acetate emulsion polymerization, paper surface sizing, textile warp sizing, water-soluble films, and remoistenable adhesives. The selection of GL-05 over other GOHSENOL grades depends on the balance between cold-water solubility, dried-film tensile strength, and solution handling viscosity.

Aqueous solution preparation of GL-05 at ambient temperature is feasible because the 86.5–89.0 mol% hydrolysis level suppresses the crystallinity that forces fully saponified polyvinyl alcohol into solution only above 80–85 °C. Dry GL-05 added directly to a stirred tank at 20 °C can still form gelatinous surface lumps. Production-scale mixing therefore uses a Cowles-type high-shear disperser with a tip speed of 15–20 m/s to suspend the granules at 18–22 °C, followed by heating to 75–85 °C for 30–60 min and cooling under moderate agitation at 50–80 rpm. The low molecular weight of GL-05 permits high-solids solutions up to 15–20 wt% before viscosity limits transfer by gear pump, but foam generation increases with agitation above 80 rpm during cooling. Borate-containing additives should be avoided or introduced only after dilution because borate ions crosslink the pendant diol units of polyvinyl alcohol and raise solution viscosity sharply. Preservative selection for stored aqueous solutions commonly includes isothiazolinone compounds at 50–150 ppm; the pH should be maintained above 4.5 to avoid slow deacetylation and below 9.0 to avoid excessive hydrolysis.
In vinyl acetate and vinyl acetate-ethylene emulsion polymerization, GOHSENOL GL-05 functions as a protective colloid rather than as a conventional surfactant. The 86.5–89.0 mol% degree of hydrolysis provides aqueous solubility, while the residual acetate segments contribute hydrophobic anchoring at monomer-water interfaces. Typical addition rates in batch reactors are 2–6 parts per hundred monomer by weight; the charge is prepared as a 4–10 wt% solution and added before initiation at 65–75 °C with potassium persulfate or a redox initiator. The short chain length of GL-05 stabilizes latex without producing the high viscosity associated with fully hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol at equal solids. In 1000 L glass-lined reactors, substitution of a fully hydrolysed grade by GL-05 at equal active content can reduce latex viscosity and improve freeze-thaw stability, while increasing dried-film water sensitivity. Increased coagulum has been observed when the GL-05 solution is charged at pH below 4.5 or when transition-metal contamination exceeds 5 ppm; demineralized water and 0.01–0.05 wt% EDTA are therefore used as process controls. Laser diffraction measurement according to ISO 13320 can be used to track particle size; published data for this specific production equipment configuration is limited, but PVA-stabilized vinyl acetate latices frequently show D50 values in the 0.5–2.0 µm range.
Paper surface sizing and remoistenable adhesive formulations exploit the cold-water solubility of GL-05. In starch-based size press formulations, addition of 2–4 wt% GL-05 is used to improve surface strength and reduce liquid penetration. Mill-specific comparison using ISO 535 Cobb60 water absorption is required because the reduction depends on base sheet permeability, size press configuration, and drying intensity. Films cast from 10% aqueous GL-05 solution and dried at 60 °C show lower tensile strength than fully hydrolysed films of equivalent viscosity, but the films rewet more rapidly because residual acetate groups reduce crystallinity. Tensile properties of supported or free films may be determined by ISO 527-3:2018 or ASTM D882. Remoistenable adhesive formulations commonly use 10–25 wt% GL-05 in water with 5–15 phr of glycerol or sorbitol on PVA solids. The low molecular weight reduces cold-viscosity and increases rewetting speed, but the resulting adhesive film has lower water resistance than fully hydrolysed PVA or crosslinked vinyl acetate emulsion adhesives. The grade is therefore selected where fast water activation is more important than maximum bond strength under wet conditions.
Thermal processing of GOHSENOL GL-05 below its decomposition onset requires internal plasticization and narrow barrel-temperature control. Thermogravimetric analysis under nitrogen indicates decomposition onset near 200 °C. Extrusion of PVA compounds therefore typically uses 10–30 phr of glycerol, sorbitol, or water as internal plasticizer in corotating twin-screw extruders with L/D ratios of 40:1 to 52:1. Barrel temperatures are commonly set between 90 °C and 190 °C, with the highest zones at the die. The low molecular weight of GL-05 reduces melt viscosity but also reduces blown-film bubble stability compared with higher-viscosity grades such as GL-08. Die-lip deposits can develop when processing temperatures exceed 200 °C or when residence time exceeds 180 s; this is consistent with thermal elimination of acetic acid and the formation of conjugated double bonds. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h is recommended when moisture content exceeds 5 wt% or when the product has been stored at relative humidity above 60%, because excess water causes bubble irregularity and surface defects. Plasticizer migration kinetics in the finished film are faster for GL-05 than for higher molecular weight partially hydrolysed grades, which should be considered when specifying film-to-film blocking behavior.
Partially hydrolysed PVA grades differ from fully hydrolysed grades primarily in dissolution temperature, crystallinity, moisture uptake, and dried-film water resistance. Fully hydrolysed PVA in the same viscosity range requires solution temperatures of 80–90 °C, whereas GL-05 dissolves at ambient temperature with proper dispersion. The residual acetate content of GL-05 reduces dried-film tensile strength but improves flexibility and rewetting. Within the partially hydrolysed GOHSENOL GL series, the main variable is chain length. GL-03 has a specified 4% solution viscosity of 3.0–3.8 mPa·s, providing lower cohesive strength but easier high-solids handling. GL-08 has a typical viscosity of 7.5–9.5 mPa·s, providing higher dried-film tensile and adhesive strength but increased mixing load. GL-05 at 4.8–5.8 mPa·s is therefore specified when the application requires film strength above GL-03 but solution viscosity below GL-08.
| Grade | Viscosity of 4% solution at 20 °C | Degree of hydrolysis | Practical Consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| GL-03 | 3.0–3.8 mPa·s | 86.5–89.0 mol% | Lowest cohesive strength; lowest solution viscosity |
| GL-05 | 4.8–5.8 mPa·s | 86.5–89.0 mol% | Balance of film strength and manageable solution viscosity |
| GL-08 | 7.5–9.5 mPa·s | 86.5–89.0 mol% | Higher tensile and adhesive strength; higher mixing load |
Before specifying GL-05 for food-contact or long-term storage, the current safety data sheet and lot-specific certificate of analysis should be reviewed. In the United States, polyvinyl alcohol may be referenced as an indirect additive in components of paper and paperboard under FDA 21 CFR 176.170; the end-use limitations are substance-specific and must be confirmed against the current revision. In the European Union, the finished article must comply with the relevant requirements of Regulation (EC) No 10/2011 and national food-contact legislation. Japanese applications require confirmation under the Food Sanitation Law. Storage in sealed bags at or below 40 °C and 60% relative humidity is recommended to prevent caking and moisture uptake above 5 wt%. The manufacturer may assign a shelf life of 12 months from the production date for unopened packaging; material older than this should be qualified by JIS K6726 viscosity, pH, and volatile matter testing before use.
