Ester-soluble PVAc solution, model ES-PVAc 40E, is a single-component, thermoplastic binder supplied as a clear, low-color resin solution in a mixed ester solvent system. The non-volatile portion consists of medium-molecular-weight poly(vinyl acetate) homopolymer with a weight-average molecular weight range of 85,000–125,000 g/mol as determined by size-exclusion chromatography following ISO 16014-2:2019. The solution is manufactured to a non-volatile content of 40.0 ± 1.0% by mass, with residual vinyl acetate monomer concentration held below 0.10% by headspace gas chromatography according to ISO 6401:2022. The solvent phase is a nominal 80:20 mass blend of ethyl acetate and n-propyl acetate. The acid number is maintained below 1.0 mg KOH/g by alcoholic potassium hydroxide titration per ASTM D465-15. The closed-cup flash point is below -4°C measured according to ISO 3679:2022, and the calculated VOC content is 576 ± 15 g/L based on a measured density of 0.96 ± 0.01 g/cm³ at 20°C per ISO 2811-1:2016.
Three operational boundaries separate this ester-carrier solution from water-borne PVAc emulsions and alcohol-soluble types. The ester solvent blend provides a high evaporation rate and low latent heat of vaporization compared with water; ethyl acetate has a relative evaporation rate of 6.0 relative to n-butyl acetate. The absence of surfactants and protective colloids reduces dried-film water sensitivity and prevents surfactant bloom on laminating lines. Unlike alcohol-soluble PVAc, the product is not dilutable with ethanol beyond 5.0% by mass without viscosity rise; dilution is normally performed with ethyl acetate or n-propyl acetate. The dried film remains thermoplastic and softens above 60°C, whereas polyvinyl butyral grades require plasticizer addition for equivalent room-temperature film formation.

In gravure ink applications, ES-PVAc 40E is added to the finished ink vehicle at 5.0–15.0% by weight as a co-binder with nitrocellulose or polyurethane. It disperses under a Cowles dissolver at 800–1200 rpm. High-shear dispersion above 1500 rpm should be limited because viscous heating raises solution temperature above 35°C and produces solvent loss. On a 9-station gravure press, viscosity drift over a 12-hour shift remains below 5.0% when the ink sump is covered and exhaust air is balanced. Open-sump operation accelerates evaporation of ethyl acetate, raising vehicle viscosity beyond 2500 mPa·s and producing dot bridging in highlight screens. Addition of ethyl acetate to restore press viscosity is limited to 10.0% of original batch mass per shift; exceeding this limit reduces the non-volatile content below 35.0% and weakens film integrity.
Film properties of the dried polymer are not identical to the solution. When cast on release paper and dried for 24 h at 23 ± 2°C and 50 ± 5% RH, the film exhibits an ultimate tensile strength of 25–35 MPa and elongation at break of 15–25% when tested on a Type 5A specimen at 50 mm/min according to ISO 527-3:2018. Water absorption after 24 h immersion at 23°C is below 2.5% by mass when measured according to ASTM D570-98(2018). Emulsion-derived PVAc films with retained hydrocolloids can absorb more than 10% under the same test. Compatibility with nitrocellulose is maintained up to 1:1 dry-binder mass without haze when cast on glass and checked visually. With polyester polyurethane resins, haze-free films are obtained up to 30% replacement of PVAc by mass if the polyurethane acid number is below 2.0 mg KOH/g.
When the solution is used as a lamination binder for PET/PE and PET/CPP structures, it is compounded with a polyisocyanate crosslinker at an NCO:OH ratio of 1.2–1.8. The mixed adhesive is applied at dry coating weights of 2.0–3.5 g/m² using a 120-line/cm gravure cylinder. T-peel adhesion measured according to ASTM D1876-08 on 25 mm strips at 300 mm/min reaches 2.0–5.0 N/15 mm on PET/PE when the PET surface energy is above 40 mN/m and retained solvent is below 12 mg/m². Under these conditions, production failure commonly shifts from interfacial peel to film tear, indicating that the cohesive strength of the laminate exceeds that of the sealant web.
At line speeds of 150–220 m/min, a three-zone air-impingement dryer with zone setpoints of 60°C, 75°C, and 85°C and nozzle velocities of 18–25 m/s reduces retained solvent in a 2.5 g/m² dry adhesive layer to 6–10 mg/m². If the final zone temperature falls below 70°C, or if the exhaust solvent load exceeds 25% LEL, retained ethyl acetate can rise above 12 mg/m². At this threshold, laminated film can exhibit delayed tunnelling, residual odour, and heat-seal strength loss of up to 30% when tested at 150°C and 0.3 MPa according to ASTM F88/F88M-21. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; converters should validate residual solvent by headspace gas chromatography using ASTM F1884-04 on the actual film combination and gauge combination.
Adhesion to untreated polyolefin film is negligible because the solution surface tension is approximately 28–30 mN/m and untreated polyethylene is typically 30–32 mN/m. Corona treatment to 38–42 mN/m is required for consistent wetting and bonding, verified by dyne pens according to ASTM D2578-17. For polyethylene terephthalate, the ester solvent blend partially swells the polar surface and improves anchorage. Residual solvent above 12 mg/m² can plasticize the PE sealant layer and reduce heat-seal peel force by up to 30%. This effect is observed on pilot lines as a shift from film-tear to interfacial peel at the sealant-adhesive interface.
Amine-functional additives should be avoided because residual amine accelerates ester solvent hydrolysis, releasing acetic acid and increasing solution acidity. The resulting pH fall can destabilize viscosity and reduce adhesion. The product is not water-reducible: water addition above 5.0% by mass produces visible phase separation and hazy dried films. High-level additions of zinc stearate or calcium carbonate above 3.0% by weight can adsorb onto the polymer chain and increase viscosity beyond 3000 mPa·s. Storage in sealed stainless steel or high-density polyethylene drums below 30°C is recommended to limit solvent loss and moisture ingress.
Unlike water-borne PVAc emulsions, the product is not low-VOC; its calculated VOC content of 576 ± 15 g/L restricts use in regions with VOC limits below this value. Flash-point and explosion limits require electrically classified equipment. The dried film may be evaluated under 21 CFR 175.300 for resinous and polymeric coatings if formulated only with compliant additives; the neat solution is not food-contact certified. It contains no phthalate plasticizers, and heavy-metal content remains below the limits of RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU when tested by XRF screening according to IEC 62321-3-1:2013.
