SINOPEC Sanren EVA 11/3.5 is an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer supplied in pellet form. The grade designation encodes two principal specification fields: a nominal vinyl acetate comonomer content of 11 wt% and a nominal melt flow rate of 3.5 g/10 min determined at 190 °C under a 2.16 kg load in accordance with ISO 1133-1:2022 or ASTM D1238. The low vinyl acetate content positions the material between unmodified low-density polyethylene and softer 18–28 wt% vinyl acetate grades, reducing crystalline perfection while retaining sufficient melt strength for conventional polyolefin extrusion and injection-moulding operations. Applications in which this balance is commonly evaluated include flexible packaging films, profile extrusion, injection-moulded flexible components, and modification of LDPE-rich recyclate.

Specification Limits, Test Methods, and Melt Rheology

Release testing for EVA 11/3.5 normally includes comonomer content, melt flow rate, and density. The vinyl acetate content is commonly determined by hydrolysis or infrared methods; the relevant standard designation is ISO 8985:2022. Melt flow rate is measured at 190 °C with a 2.16 kg load using ISO 1133-1:2022 or ASTM D1238. Density is reported according to ISO 1183-1:2019. Because exact lot values vary, the producer batch certificate should be consulted before die design, food-contact qualification, or substrate-adhesion trials.

The density spread reflects vinyl acetate content, additive loading, and thermal history. The low comonomer content keeps the softening point above that of 18 wt% VA grades but below that of LDPE. Comparative Vicat values under ISO 306:2022 method A50 for similar 11 wt% VA EVAs are often in the 75–85 °C range, while LDPE film grades commonly range from 88–100 °C. The melt is pseudoplastic rather than Newtonian; capillary rheometry data generated according to ISO 11443:2021 should be used for die pressure calculations and for matching screw throughput with take-off speed. A single melt flow rate point does not capture the shear-thinning behaviour that controls edge weave, draw resonance, or extruder head pressure.

Why Does the 11 wt% Vinyl Acetate Content Narrow the Adhesion and Heat-Seal Window Compared with 18 wt% Grades?

The vinyl acetate comonomer introduces acetate side groups that disrupt ethylene chain folding. Under differential scanning calorimetry performed according to ISO 11357-3:2018, a polymer of this composition typically displays a broad melting endotherm with a peak near 95–105 °C, whereas LDPE of similar melt flow rate tends to peak near 105–115 °C and an 18 wt% VA EVA tends to peak near 84–92 °C. The crystalline fraction is intermediate; similar EVAs may show 25–35% crystallinity by DSC, compared with roughly 35–45% for LDPE and 18–25% for higher-VA grades. This intermediate crystallinity reduces heat-seal initiation temperature relative to LDPE, but the shift is smaller than that obtained with 18 wt% VA resin. Heat-seal strength determined by ASTM F88/F88M-21 and hot tack determined by ASTM F1921-18 therefore rank EVA 11/3.5 between LDPE and higher-VA EVAs at identical gauge, dwell time, and sealing temperature.

Peel adhesion to aluminium foil, primed polyester, or corona-treated polyethylene measured by ASTM D1876 improves relative to LDPE but remains below that of a 28 wt% VA extrusion-lamination grade. Published peel-adhesion curves for this specific SINOPEC Sanren grade are limited; the comparative position described here is drawn from the broader low-VA EVA copolymer class. Similarly, oxygen transmission rate measured by ASTM D3985 is slightly higher than for LDPE because the acetate comonomer reduces crystalline packing, but the penalty is smaller than for an 18 wt% VA grade. Converters seeking very low seal initiation or maximum foil adhesion should qualify an 18–28 wt% VA grade before selecting EVA 11/3.5.

On a monolayer cast-film line using a 90 mm single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D barrier screw, barrel temperatures from hopper to adapter are commonly profiled at 160/175/185/190/195 °C, and melt temperature is held below 210 °C. Prolonged residence above 220 °C accelerates deacetylation, producing acetic acid, discoloration, and carbonized deposits on the die lip. Screw speeds above 110 rpm may produce viscous heating sufficient to exceed this ceiling, particularly with a worn screw or high back pressure. Pre-drying at 60–70 °C for 4 h using a desiccant dryer with a dew point of −40 °C is applied when pellets have been stored at relative humidity above 60% or when surface moisture is visible. Fluoropolymer-based polymer processing aids can be used, but amine-based slip or antistatic additives may aggravate acid-catalysed discoloration and die plate-out; compatibility trials should be run before production.

When EVA 11/3.5 Replaces LDPE in Flexible Packaging, Profile Extrusion, and Injection-Moulded Flexible Components

Compared with an LDPE of equivalent melt flow rate, EVA 11/3.5 exhibits a lower tensile yield stress and flexural modulus when tested under ISO 527-2:2012 and ISO 178:2019. The practical consequence is a more flexible part or film at room temperature and a measurable improvement in low-temperature brittleness temperature as determined by ASTM D746-20. Environmental stress-crack resistance under ASTM D1693 is generally superior to LDPE because comonomer disruption reduces spherulitic boundaries that act as crack-propagation paths. These property changes are obtained with only a modest reduction in temperature resistance, which makes the grade appropriate for packaging films that require improved dart impact under ASTM D1709 without the very low modulus of an 18–28 wt% VA EVA.

In blown-film operations, the material should be treated as a lower-melt-strength resin. Bubble stability is generally maintained at blow-up ratios of 1.8:1–2.5:1; blow-up ratios above 3.0:1 may cause bubble flutter unless the air ring is optimized for low-melt-tension polymers and the frost-line height is shortened. Cast-film chill-roll temperatures of 20–35 °C provide adequate web release without excessive curl. For profile extrusion, screw designs with barrel venting and melt temperatures of 180–205 °C are used; a gear pump between extruder and die reduces surging caused by the shear-thinning character of the melt. Haze and gloss values should be measured by ISO 14782 and ASTM D2457 respectively, but chill-roll surface finish and melt temperature often influence these values more than the base resin itself.

As an injection-moulding feedstock, EVA 11/3.5 can be processed on standard reciprocating-screw machines with clamp force capacities from 80–120 t for small flexible parts. Melt temperature is held at 185–210 °C, mould temperature at 20–40 °C, and injection speed is set in the moderate range to avoid jetting. Hold pressure should be minimized because the low crystallinity delays solidification and can extend cycle time relative to LDPE. Mould release agents containing silicone should be qualified before production because excessive release agent can interfere with post-mould adhesion or printing. In masterbatch or compounding applications, the grade can be dry-blended with LDPE or linear low-density polyethylene at 10–30 wt%. On a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D, distributive mixing elements, and side-feeding capability, the low softening point assists pigment wetting, but the limited vinyl acetate content means that carbon black and polar organic pigments may require a higher-VA carrier for maximum dispersion stability.

In hot-melt adhesive compounding, EVA 11/3.5 is not a direct substitute for EVA 28/25. The low vinyl acetate content reduces the solubility parameter match with rosin ester tackifiers and aromatic hydrocarbon resins, limiting tack and wet-out measured by loop tack or 180° peel tests. Hot-melt formulators generally select VA contents above 18 wt% to maintain low-temperature adhesive flexibility and substrate wetting. Published data for low-VA EVA in pressure-sensitive or packaging adhesive formulations is limited, and the grade should not be extrapolated into this use without a full adhesive performance matrix.

Food-contact suitability of the base polymer is evaluated under 21 CFR 177.1350 in the United States and under Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 in Europe. The base polymer specification alone does not guarantee final article compliance; converters are responsible for migration testing according to the applicable overall migration limit and specific migration limits, using methods such as EN 1186-1 or equivalent. REACH registration and RoHS compliance depend on the additive package and any colourants or release agents introduced downstream. Storage should be in a clean, dry area at ambient temperature below 50 °C, away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Before lot qualification, melt flow rate and density should be rechecked according to ISO 1133-1:2022 and ISO 1183-1:2019, because lot-to-lot variation in comonomer sequence distribution can alter heat-seal and adhesion performance even when the bulk vinyl acetate content remains within specification.
