Aplicação de EVOH EV-3201 VT /FT

On a nine-layer blown film line equipped with a 65 mm single-screw EVOH extruder with an L/D 30:1 screw and a barrier deckle width of 1,600 mm, EVOH EV-3201 VT/FT is introduced as the core oxygen barrier ply between two anhydride-modified polyolefin tie layers and LLDPE or PP skin layers. The grade is pre-dried at 85 °C for 5 h to a target moisture content below 0.05%; processing is maintained at 210–220 °C barrel temperature and 220 °C melt temperature, with maximum residence time limited to 20 min because stagnant melt above 240 °C generates gel specks at the die lip. Layer distribution is set at 8–12% by mass EVOH, 6–8% tie resin, and the balance LLDPE or PP, producing an EVOH layer thickness of 3–10 µm in a finished film thickness of 60–120 µm. The relevant compliance framework includes FDA 21 CFR 177.1360 for ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer in food-contact films and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 with overall migration testing according to EN 1186-1:2002. Terminal product types include flow-pack laminates, lid films, and vacuum pouches for processed meat, sliced cheese, and smoked fish under refrigerated distribution. On production-scale lines, the main bottleneck is bubble instability when dry EVOH resin is exposed to ambient air for more than 20 min after opening, which raises moisture content and creates local gauge variation in the barrier layer.

What Limits Retort Tray Delamination in PP/EVOH/PP Thermoformed Structures?

Delamination in retortable PP/EVOH/PP trays is most frequently initiated at the tie-layer/EVOH interface after 121 °C and 30 min thermal processing because moisture uptake in the EVOH layer reduces interfacial peel strength and differential thermal expansion between polypropylene and the barrier layer concentrates stress in the flange radius. The sheet structure is produced as a five-layer cast sheet with EVOH EV-3201 VT/FT at 7–10% of total sheet mass, corresponding to 40–80 µm EVOH in a 900–1,200 µm sheet, with maleic anhydride-grafted PP tie resins at 3–5% per side. Extrusion runs on a five-layer cast line with a 120 mm main extruder and a 75 mm EVOH extruder at 215–225 °C, a 60–80 °C roll-stack temperature, and sheet surface temperature during plug-assist thermoforming of 165–175 °C. Post-retort seal integrity is assessed according to ASTM F88/F88M-15, oxygen transmission rate by ASTM D3985-17 at 23 °C and 65% RH, and hot-fill stability by internal burst testing following ASTM F1140-14. The compliance set for food-contact retortable packaging includes FDA 21 CFR 177.1360 and Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Terminal product types include retortable trays for ready meals, wet pet food, and baby food. The dominant process failure is not EVOH degradation but layer thinning at the tray corner: when the area draw ratio exceeds 3.5:1, the EVOH layer can fall below 15 µm, producing localized oxygen ingress and accelerated delamination after retort.

Fuel Tank Inner Layer Oxygen Barrier Design for CARB LEV III and EPA Tier 3 Evaporative Emission Limits

Because the barrier layer must survive parison pinch-off and vibration welding in a six-layer sequential coextrusion blow-moulded fuel tank wall, EVOH EV-3201 VT/FT is specified at 30–80 µm layer thickness, representing 1.5–3.0% of the total wall mass, in a nominal wall thickness of 3–5 mm. The EVOH is positioned between two LDPE-g-MAH tie layers and HDPE structural layers. The EVOH extruder zone setpoints are held at 205–215 °C, the tie resin at 220 °C, and the accumulator head at 220 °C; die gap is programmed between 1.5–2.5 mm and the parison is inflated at a blow pressure of 0.8–1.0 MPa. The processing window is bounded by a lower limit of 200 °C, below which die lines and layer thickness fluctuation above ±10% are recorded, and an upper limit of 225 °C, above which gel particles appear within 6 h at the die lip. Certification for the North American market follows SAE J1737 permeation measurement with CE10 fuel at 40 °C, 40 CFR Part 86 vehicle evaporative emission procedures, and CARB LEV III diurnal plus hot-soak hydrocarbon limits. The European pathway applies UNECE Regulation No. 34 for plastic fuel tanks. Terminal product types include multilayer blow-moulded gasoline fuel tanks for passenger cars, small-engine fuel tanks, and diesel fuel tank shells where hydrocarbon barrier is required. Published data for EV-3201 VT/FT in a six-layer fuel tank configuration is limited; blow-moulding trials are required to confirm layer continuity at the pinch-off under production clamp force and parison programming.

Layer integrity after moulding is checked by microtome sectioning at the tank corners and by oxygen permeation coupons cut from the wall, tested according to ASTM D3985-17 at 23 °C and 0% RH. During parison programming, the pinch-off thickness must be reduced to 1.0 mm before mould closure to prevent isolated EVOH islands in the weld line; in blow-moulding plants, the main failure is barrier layer ductile rupture during pinch-off when regrind content exceeds 35% and the melt strength of the EVOH is insufficient to maintain continuity. The tie resin must remain above 200 °C to maintain adhesion, while the EVOH must remain below 225 °C to avoid catalyst residue-induced gelation. This is the narrowest thermal operating window among the scenarios described and therefore demands screw torque monitoring, head-pressure recording, and shot-to-shot parison weight verification at intervals not exceeding 30 min.

When a moisture-sensitive oral solid dosage form requires a PVC-free blister base web with a water vapour transmission rate below 0.5 g/(m²·day) at 38 °C and 90% RH, a five-layer PP/PE/EVOH/PE/PP coextrusion is produced on a cast film line with EVOH EV-3201 VT/FT at an EVOH layer thickness of 20–35 µm and a mass fraction of 10–15% in a total base web thickness of 250–400 µm. Pre-drying before extrusion is set at 85 °C for 5 h to less than 0.05% moisture, and the EVOH extruder barrel is operated at 210–220 °C; edge trim is reintroduced into the PP skin layers only, not into the barrier layer, to prevent gel contamination. Thermoforming is performed at 120–140 °C with plug-assisted drawing, and the formed cavities are sealed against aluminium lidding foil at 150–170 °C. The compliance framework includes FDA 21 CFR 177.1360 for the EVOH layer, USP <661.1> for plastic packaging materials, and USP <671> for moisture vapour transmission testing of the finished blister; packaging line qualification for pharmaceutical use follows current good manufacturing practice and ICH Q1A stability protocols. Terminal product types include unit-dose blister packages for prescription oral solids, clinical trial materials, and veterinary chewable formulations. A recurrent production issue is microcracking in the EVOH layer when the thermoforming temperature falls below 120 °C; microcracks are not visible on the formed blister but increase oxygen transmission rate by more than 20% when the barrier layer is strained beyond its yield point.

When Oxygen Diffusion Through PEX-B Pipes Exceeds DIN 4726 Limits, an EVOH EV-3201 VT/FT Barrier Layer Is Inserted at 50–100 µm

In radiant heating pipes produced by silane-grafted polyethylene, the oxygen permeability of the pipe wall is controlled by a five-layer construction: PE outer, tie resin, EVOH EV-3201 VT/FT, tie resin, and PE-Xb inner. The EVOH layer is specified at 50–100 µm, which represents 2–5% of the total wall thickness for a 16 × 2.0 mm pipe, and is coextruded through a three-layer die head at 210–225 °C with vacuum calibration maintaining outside diameter to ±0.05 mm. The oxygen diffusion requirement for plastic heating pipes is based on DIN 4726, which stipulates an oxygen permeation rate below 0.1 g/(m³·day) at 40 °C; compliance is verified after conditioning at 70 °C in water to simulate service. Extrusion of EV-3201 VT/FT in this configuration requires a melt temperature at least 10 °C below the maximum 240 °C degradation threshold, while the tie resin must remain above 200 °C to maintain adhesion. The main field failure mode is barrier layer waviness caused by melt viscosity mismatch between the EVOH and the maleic anhydride-grafted polyolefin; radial die land temperature difference across the barrier channel must be held below 5 °C. The applicable product standards include DIN 4726 and ISO 21003-2 for PE-X piping systems, with barrier-layer performance evaluated under ISO 17455-1 for oxygen permeability. Terminal product types include underfloor heating pipes, radiator connection pipes, and low-temperature district heating distribution pipes.

Parison Wall Uniformity Limits in Six-Layer Cosmetic Bottle Blow Molding

Extrusion blow moulding of HDPE/EVOH barrier bottles for personal care products introduces a six-layer parison composed of HDPE outer, regrind, tie resin, EVOH EV-3201 VT/FT, tie resin, and HDPE inner. The EVOH layer is set at 25–50 µm, corresponding to 3–6% of total bottle weight, and is processed at 210–220 °C with a continuous accumulator head. The critical production limit is radial parison wall thickness programming: the shoulder-to-base wall thickness reduction must not exceed 15%, otherwise the EVOH layer thins below 10 µm and visible waviness appears in the neck and shoulder region. The compliance pathway for cosmetic packaging is REACH EC 1907/2006 for the polymer substance and Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009 for cosmetic product packaging migration limits; FDA 21 CFR 177.1360 applies where the same bottle is used for food-contact applications. Heavy metal and overall migration are verified by EU 2019/1937 testing protocols. Terminal product types include barrier bottles for toners, hair care products, and lotion tubes where fragrance or oxygen-sensitive actives require an oxygen barrier. The dominant production failure is a 1.2 mm pinch-off thickening that traps EVOH as isolated islands in the weld line; this is managed by reducing parison programming at the pinch-off zone to 0.8 mm before mould closure.

    Mais Introdução

Ethylene–vinyl alcohol copolymer EV-3201 VT/FT is supplied as an oxygen barrier interlayer for coextruded rigid sheet, cast film, and blow-molded containers. The base copolymer contains a nominal 32 mol% ethylene content, placing the grade in the intermediate barrier segment of the EVOH family: higher dry oxygen barrier than 38 mol% and 44 mol% grades, but with greater moisture sensitivity and a narrower forming window. The VT/FT suffix is manufacturer-specific nomenclature for two rheological and surface-treatment variants: one intended for vacuum thermoforming, the other for film conversion. Certificates of analysis should be checked for lot-specific values because published data for the exact VT/FT subgrade are limited. Typical class properties for a 32 mol% EVOH include density of 1.18–1.20 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019, melt volume-flow rate of 1.0–2.0 g/10 min at 190 °C/2.16 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022, and a melting peak of 181–185 °C under ISO 11357-3:2018. Oxygen transmission rate of a 20 μm layer at 20 °C and 65% RH is typically 0.4–0.6 cm³·20 μm/(m²·day·atm) when measured under ASTM D3985-17. The product is used primarily where dry oxygen ingress must remain below 1 cm³·20 μm/(m²·day·atm) in polypropylene or high-density polyethylene structures.

How Does Moisture Uptake Affect the Oxygen Barrier of EV-3201 VT/FT?

Oxygen permeation through 32 mol% EVOH is controlled by free volume and hydrogen-bond density in the amorphous phase. At 65% RH, a 20 μm layer can maintain oxygen transmission below 0.6 cm³·20 μm/(m²·day·atm). At 90% RH, water plasticizes the amorphous phase, and oxygen transmission rises to roughly 3–5 cm³·20 μm/(m²·day·atm). Equilibrium moisture uptake at 65% RH is approximately 3–4 wt%, increasing to 8–10 wt% at 90% RH. This behavior is reversible after desorption, but it imposes a structural requirement: the EV-3201 VT/FT layer must be placed behind hydrophobic polypropylene or high-density polyethylene skins of at least 50 μm total thickness to delay moisture ingress under high-humidity distribution. The 32 mol% grade is therefore not recommended as a direct food-contact outer layer in high-relative-humidity dairy or produce applications. In retort conditions above 121 °C, published data for this specific grade are limited, but general 32 mol% EVOH behavior indicates rapid barrier loss unless the adjacent polyolefin layer contains a desiccant or the structure is permitted to re-dry post-retort.

Layer construction for rigid trays typically uses PP skin /tie /EV-3201 VT /tie /PP skin at total sheet thickness 0.8–1.5 mm, with the EVOH layer at 20–30 μm. In cast film, the EVOH layer is 5–12 μm within a PE/tie/EVOH/tie/PE structure. The tie resin is a maleic anhydride-grafted polyolefin applied at 10–15% of total thickness. Inadequate tie coverage or channel flow across the die is reported to produce delamination after thermoforming because the EVOH layer has lower elongation at break than the polyolefin skins.

Thermoforming and Film Conversion Operating Window

Processing is performed on three- or five-layer coextrusion lines. Melt temperature should remain between 200 °C and 230 °C; above 240 °C, vinyl alcohol sequences undergo elimination and oxidative crosslinking, producing gel defects that appear as lens-shaped inclusions in film and sheet. The temperature window above 235 °C is narrow; excursions of more than 10 min are associated with measurable gel formation. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h to a dew point of -40 °C is required when regrind exceeds 20 wt% or when ambient relative humidity is above 60%. The VT variant is directed at vacuum forming of barrier sheet; typical sheet surface temperatures are 160–180 °C, and mold temperatures are held at 40–60 °C to reduce plug marks. The FT variant is directed at cast film; die lip gaps in the range 0.8–1.2 mm and draw-down ratios of 3:1–5:1 are common for 5–12 μm EVOH layers. Published data for the exact VT/FT subgrade are limited, so these values should be treated as class-level processing ranges and verified against lot-specific technical data sheets.

Adhesion and Tie-Resin Selection Determine Thermoforming Durability

EV-3201 VT/FT does not adhere adequately to polypropylene or polyethylene without a maleic anhydride-grafted polyolefin tie resin. Interlayer adhesion is measured under ASTM F904-16 or equivalent peel methods; values below 2.0 N/15 mm are associated with delamination during plug-assisted forming. Processors report that edge trim containing 15–20% EVOH can be recycled into the skin layer only when the trim is dried and the EVOH is kept below 5 wt% of the skin layer; higher loadings produce die lines and local yellowing. Direct contact with unneutralized acidic purge compounds and certain metal stearates is not recommended because acidic residues accelerate alcohol-group elimination reactions at processing temperatures. The grade is not designed for injection molding; narrow gates and high shear can generate shear heating above 240 °C.

Table 1 lists the property envelope for a 32 mol% EVOH of this class. Table 2 compares the dry oxygen barrier of the EV-3201 VT/FT class with other EVOH grades and non-EVOH barrier resins.

When EV-3201 VT/FT Replaces PVDC or Nylon-MXD6 in Modified-Atmosphere Packaging

Replacing PVdC with EV-3201 VT/FT requires a structural redesign. Dry oxygen barrier improves roughly by a factor of 3–5 over PVdC at 20 °C/65% RH, but the high-humidity barrier is inferior unless the EVOH layer is buried behind hydrophobic skins. PVdC retains barrier above 85% RH and is less sensitive to moisture, but its chlorine content creates incineration and recycle constraints. Compared with Nylon-MXD6, EV-3201 VT/FT provides approximately 30–60 times lower oxygen transmission under dry conditions at equal thickness; however, Nylon-MXD6 survives retort cycling with less barrier loss and may be processed without a tie layer in some polyolefin structures. The 32 mol% grade is therefore selected when dry oxygen barrier is the primary shelf-life driver and the package has sufficient polyolefin thickness to limit moisture uptake.

On a cast film line equipped with a 50 mm barrier screw with L/D 30:1, melt temperature is usually set at 210–220 °C to suppress resin degradation. The FT variant tolerates draw-down to 5 μm when line speed is in the range 120–200 m/min, but published data for this exact configuration are limited. Edge weave and thickness variation increase when melt pressure at the die exceeds 200 bar; a gear pump is recommended for layer-thickness stability. For vacuum forming, the VT variant is reported to produce more uniform wall thickness when the sheet reaches a surface temperature of 170 °C and plug assist speed is kept below 200 mm/s. Flex-crack resistance of the 32 mol% grade is lower than 38 mol% and 44 mol% grades; for stand-up pouches exposed to repeated flexing, the structure should include a higher-ethylene EVOH cap layer or an additional polyamide layer. Published pinhole-count data under ASTM F392-20 for the exact VT/FT subgrade are limited.

Safety data sheets list the product as non-hazardous in solid pellet form, but dust generated during grinding should be controlled under general industrial hygiene practices. Compliance with Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and applicable US FDA food-contact provisions should be confirmed through the supplier’s lot-specific declaration because the VT/FT surface treatment may introduce processing aids not present in the base resin.
