The DA-102H is a carboxylated vinyl acetate–ethylene (VAE) copolymer emulsion engineered specifically for high-performance flooring adhesive formulations. Its polymer backbone incorporates a high ethylene content—sufficient to depress the glass transition temperature of the continuous film to approximately −5 °C (DSC, midpoint)—while retaining the wet tack and adhesion characteristics demanded by resilient floor covering installations. Commercial trials on a two-roll roller-coater line applying 150 g/m² wet film weight demonstrated that the emulsion sustains a line speed of 18 m/min without misting or foam build-up, provided recirculation pumps are sized to deliver low-shear running pressures below 2 bar; this behaviour is attributed to the controlled particle size distribution (volume median diameter 0.5 µm) and an electrosterically stabilised surface that resists excessive shear-induced aggregation. When compounded into a pressure-sensitive adhesive for luxury vinyl tile (LVT), a formulation containing 30 phr calcium carbonate filler and 0.3 wt% of a polyurethane-based thickener yielded a 90° peel strength of 4.6 N/mm (ASTM D6862, stainless steel substrate, 7 days at 23 °C/50 % RH) and a lap shear strength on concrete of 1.3 MPa (ASTM D1002). These values exceed those typically obtained with unmodified PVAc homopolymer emulsions, which embrittle below 15 °C and lack the permanent tack required for pressure-sensitive flooring adhesives, and also surpass standard acrylic emulsions that often require external coalescing agents and exhibit higher plasticiser migration sensitivity.
The minimum film-forming temperature (MFFT) of DA-102H lies between 0 °C and 3 °C as determined by ISO 2115, allowing the adhesive to form a coherent film at ambient temperatures above 10 °C without the addition of volatile coalescents. Consequently, VOC content measured according to ASTM D2369-04 (method A, 110 °C for 1 h) remains below the detection limit of 1 g/L when the emulsion is formulated solely with inert fillers and thickeners. This attribute supports compliance with Emicode EC1 Plus, the French VOC regulation class A+, and the low-emitting materials credit under LEED v4. In contrast, many acrylic emulsions designed for flooring require 5–10 % of a high-boiling coalescent to depress their MFFT, commonly resulting in TVOC values of 50–150 g/L in the wet adhesive, which can persist for weeks during indoor curing. The self-coalescing character of DA-102H also eliminates a common production bottleneck: the slow release of coalescents can cause telescoping of stacked fresh flooring rolls when the adhesive is not fully dried, whereas the VAE emulsion, once water has evaporated, yields a tack-free backing without residual volatile plasticisation.
On porous automotive concrete substrates with residual moisture content up to 4 % by the calcium carbide method (ASTM D4944), the emulsion maintains film integrity without re-emulsification, a failure mode frequently observed with SBR lattices that undergo irreversible coagulation when exposed to alkaline pore water above pH 12. Application temperature must remain above the MFFT; at ambient temperatures below 5 °C, the adhesive film develops micro-cracks visible under 10× magnification, reducing peel strength by more than 40 % after 24 h. Flooring installers should therefore precondition the adhesive can and substrates to at least 15 °C when site conditions fall below the processing threshold. The open time under standard conditions (23 °C, 50 % RH) measured with a 1.5 mm notched trowel is 22–28 minutes (ISO 13007), sufficient for hand-lay operations but requiring mechanical compression when open time exceeds 20 minutes to ensure adequate substrate wetting.
The emulsion exhibits a Brookfield viscosity of 3500 mPa·s (RVT, spindle 6, 20 rpm, 25 °C, ISO 2555) and a pronounced shear-thinning profile: apparent viscosity drops to approximately 800 mPa·s at a shear rate of 100 s⁻¹ (cone-and-plate, 25 °C). This behaviour is advantageous for roller-coater application on polyolefin foam backing lines, where the adhesive reservoir must be pumpable yet resist sagging once deposited. A formulation thickened with 0.2 wt% alkali-swellable acrylic thickener achieved a dynamic yield stress of 25 Pa (controlled-stress ramp, 25 °C), preventing drip from non-absorbent PVC substrates during vertical curing. Process engineers should note that over-thickening above 50 Pa yield stress causes air entrapment under the film, leading to crater defects detected by inline brightness sensors at speeds exceeding 15 m/min. On manual trowel-grade adhesives, the emulsion can be formulated with associative thickeners to a Stormer viscosity of 110–130 KU (ASTM D562) without grain formation, maintaining smooth application even after 48 h of intermittent use in an open bucket.
Filler acceptance is a critical parameter; DA-102H tolerates up to 80 phr of ground calcium carbonate (d₅₀ 10 µm) without visible coagulation or grit formation when the final pH is maintained between 6.5 and 8.5. Above this loading, divalent calcium ions released into the aqueous phase can bridge carboxylate groups on adjacent particles, manifesting as a viscosity spike exceeding 50 000 mPa·s within 15 minutes of mixing. A dispermat blade operated at 500 rpm with a pre-dispersion of filler in water prior to letdown avoids local flocculation. The high carboxylic acid content (acid number 8–12 mg KOH/g of solids) provides sufficient wet-state colloidal stability to accommodate filler slurries prepared the same day, but overnight storage of heavily loaded formulations requires the addition of 0.1 wt% of a polyacrylate dispersant to prevent slow sedimentation.
Flooring adhesives in below-grade applications or tropical climates face prolonged exposure to relative humidity above 90 %. In a controlled aging test, lap-shear specimens of DA-102H-based adhesive on concrete were subjected to 7 days at 50 °C and 95 % RH (EN 14259 modified). The residual shear strength was 85 % of the initial 1.3 MPa, whereas a counterpart formulation based on a carboxylated SBR latex dropped to 58 % of its original value. The superior retention is linked to the partially crystalline ethylene sequences in the VAE backbone that inhibit water permeation and restrict ester hydrolysis to near-surface layers. SBR systems, despite higher initial elongation, suffer from oxidative degradation of the butadiene unsaturation catalysed by moisture and residual metal ions from fillers, causing embrittlement and zippering failure at the bond line. This distinction is particularly relevant where adhesive films are less than 200 µm thick, as in sheet vinyl applications, where mass transport of water is rapid.
Plasticiser migration from PVC flooring can soften acrylic adhesive films, reducing cohesive strength; DA-102H’s polar VA-rich domains are less plasticised by common phthalates and DOTP. When a 3 mm thick PVC sheet containing 30 phr DINP was adhered to concrete and aged at 60 °C for 14 days, the peel strength of the VAE-based adhesive increased by 8 % due to film annealing, while an acrylic-based adhesive lost 22 % as measured by ASTM D6862. The VAE film remains a barrier to plasticiser migration, preserving the dimensional stability of the flooring composite during the service life of the installation.

Concrete slabs frequently bear hydrocarbon-based form oils that interfere with adhesive wetting. The surface tension of DA-102H as a 50 % solids diluted dispersion is approximately 45 mN/m (du Noüy ring, 25 °C), sufficiently low to displace thin oil films without the addition of degreasing surfactants that could later migrate to the adhesive–flooring interface and cause debonding. Pull-off adhesion testing (ASTM D4541) on concrete contaminated with 3 wt% mineral oil revealed cohesive failure within the concrete at 1.6 MPa, compared to adhesive failure at the substrate for a non-carboxylated styrene-acrylic binder that exhibited a water contact angle above 80° on the same surface. The carboxylation of DA-102H not only enables ionic interactions with calcium ions at the concrete surface but also promotes wetting on low-energy surfaces; however, strongly silicophobic silane-treated concrete requires primer application, as the measured contact angle exceeds 100° and the adhesive bead retracts within seconds of troweling.
Subfloors with moisture vapour emission rates above 5 lbs/1000 ft²/24 h (ASTM F1869) or relative humidity exceeding 85 % (ASTM F2170) can cause blistering of the adhesive film when combined with completely impermeable floor coverings. Published field data for this specific VAE emulsion on moisture-barrier-deficient slabs are limited; however, the emulsion’s carboxyl groups can act as weak hydrophilic sites, and a 48 h cure at low ambient humidity (30 % RH) is recommended before applying top-down moisture exposure to minimise osmotic blister formation. The use of a reactive two-part silane primer in such conditions has been validated with comparable VAE chemistries and yields moisture-resistant bonds, but the DA-102H straight system remains most reliable on slabs with emission rates below the 3 lbs threshold.

DA-102H is delivered at a pH of 4.8 and must not be blended with strong alkalis such as 10 % sodium hydroxide solution, as this can trigger rapid hydrolysis of the ester backbone and a drop in cohesive strength. Adjustment of adhesive pH for substrate specificity is best performed using ammonia or volatile amines, added dropwise under mechanical agitation to avoid gelation. During formulation, prolonged contact with equipment made of bare aluminium or brass should be prevented because acetate ions liberated at the acidic pH can corrode non-stainless metal parts, introducing metal ions that accelerate film ageing. All processing recommendations have been validated on a batch scale of 1000 L in stainless steel vessel equipped with a dual-motion anchor/stirrer, and any scaling to larger volumes should preserve the same tip speed of 2.5 m/s to maintain the target particle size integrity.
