Supplied as an anionic/nonionic-stabilized aqueous dispersion of vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer, VINAVIL EVA 202 VAE Emulsion is used in waterborne adhesive systems that require low-temperature film formation without external coalescing solvents. The ethylene comonomer disrupts poly(vinyl acetate) crystallinity and functions as an internal plasticizer, reducing the minimum film-forming temperature and limiting the need for dibutyl phthalate or diisononyl phthalate. In laminating operations, the product is typically applied by roller coater or slot-die coater to corona-treated polyester film, coated paper, or paperboard; wet coat weights of 18–25 g/m² are common for paper-to-film laminates, although line speed must be adjusted when high humidity increases the dryer load. The dispersion is shear-thinning and must be protected from prolonged high-shear pumping because air entrainment and temperature rise above 40 °C can reduce colloidal stability.

Food-contact suitability requires verification against the specific substrate and laminate construction under Commission Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 and German BfR Recommendation XIV; lot-specific manufacturer declarations should be requested. The dispersion is supplied as an APEO-free and plasticizer-free grade, but the formulated adhesive may require additional volatile organic compound testing according to ISO 11890-2.

    Dispersion composition and specification envelope

Representative property ranges for the as-supplied dispersion are listed in Table 1. Samples are conditioned at 23 °C and 50 % RH according to ISO 291 unless the method specifies otherwise. The values are typical ranges rather than specification maxima or minima; release criteria should be drawn from the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis.

The dried polymer has a glass transition temperature in the range of -15 °C to -10 °C as measured by differential scanning calorimetry according to ISO 11357-2. The low glass transition and sub-zero minimum film-forming temperature allow formulation without tributyl citrate or phthalate coalescents. The average particle size measured by laser diffraction per ISO 13320 lies in the sub-micrometre-to-low-micrometre range and contributes to mechanical stability under pumping and roller-coater shear. In production practice, gravure transfer becomes irregular when Brookfield viscosity exceeds approximately 1500 mPa·s at 20 min⁻¹; adjustment with deionized water is therefore common before long runs.

Unlike many poly(vinyl acetate) homopolymers, VINAVIL EVA 202 does not require a coalescing solvent to form a continuous film at 5–10 °C. This difference is relevant in cold warehouse laminating operations where solvent contact is prohibited by workplace exposure limits. The product displays pseudoplastic behaviour; viscosity drops under roller-coater shear and recovers quickly enough to reduce strike-through on porous paper. Anti-foam selection is critical because mineral-oil defoamers can destabilize the dispersion, while silicone-based defoamers at 0.05–0.2 wt% are normally better tolerated.

What formulation boundaries are imposed by colloidal stability?

Because the dispersion is anionically stabilized and has an acidic pH, addition of ammonia or amines raises the system pH and may produce thickening or microflocculation. Long-term storage above pH 8 is not recommended because alkaline conditions accelerate hydrolysis of vinyl acetate units. Multivalent cations such as calcium from hard water reduce electrostatic repulsion; dilution water with hardness greater than 25 °dH should be softened before letdown. Freeze-thaw cycling can generate coagulum, so storage should remain between 5 °C and 35 °C. In a bulk storage tank, slow-speed anchor agitation at 30–60 min⁻¹ prevents sedimentation without introducing excessive air.

For plasticized PVC flooring adhesives, the ethylene fraction provides resistance to plasticizer migration at the adhesive interface. Peel adhesion is evaluated under EN 1372 or EN 14259 depending on regional specification; because substrate formulation affects plasticizer type and concentration, published data for this specific product-substrate configuration is limited. Formulations with calcium carbonate filler loadings above 20 wt% require higher-shear dispersion and may need wetting agent adjustment to prevent separation during storage. When relative humidity exceeds 60 % RH, drying of paper-based laminates requires longer oven residence time or forced convection at 85–95 °C; otherwise residual moisture can reduce bond strength.

When replacement of PVAc homopolymer or acrylic dispersion is evaluated

In comparison with a poly(vinyl acetate) homopolymer of similar solids, VINAVIL EVA 202 shows lower film-forming temperature and improved adhesion to non-polar films. The PVAc homopolymer normally exhibits a minimum film-forming temperature near 15–20 °C and requires coalescent addition in winter; VINAVIL EVA 202 has a minimum film-forming temperature at or below 0 °C. Against acrylic dispersions, the VAE chemistry can provide higher wet tack on paper and lower raw material cost per dry kilogram, although the acrylic binder generally has superior ultraviolet stability and water resistance in exterior applications.

Replacement on manufacturing lines requires rheology adjustment. Acrylic dispersions often possess pseudoplastic profiles with greater shear stability under high-speed pumping, whereas VAE can shear-thicken when air is entrained. Fouling on gravure cylinders can be reduced by maintaining pH between 4 and 5; below 3.5, the dispersion may thicken, and above 8, ammonia release and hydrolysis become operational concerns. Batch-to-batch viscosity variation is typically controlled within ±500 mPa·s when measured at 20 min⁻¹ and 25 °C, which is sufficient for most continuous gravure lines but may require in-line viscosity correction for narrow slot-die coaters.

Assessing performance differences among waterborne dispersion families

The principal difference between VINAVIL EVA 202 and standard PVAc homopolymer dispersions lies in the ethylene comonomer content. Ethylene lowers the glass transition temperature and reduces the hydrophilic character of the copolymer, improving wetting of low-energy surfaces such as polypropylene and polyethylene after corona treatment. The comonomer also disrupts regular chain packing, which limits cohesive strength at elevated temperature; therefore the product is not used where sustained service temperatures exceed approximately 60 °C without crosslinker modification. Heat resistance is measured by shear adhesion failure temperature according to DIN EN 14257 or equivalent internal methods; published data for this specific configuration is limited and must be generated for each formulation.

Compared with a low-ethylene VAE grade, VINAVIL EVA 202 occupies a mid-ethylene position for balance between film flexibility and heat resistance. Lower ethylene grades provide higher shear adhesion but require coalescent addition, while higher ethylene grades provide lower glass transition and longer open time but may exhibit blocking at lower stacking temperatures. In paper-to-paper laminating, the open time is typically extended by adding poly(vinyl alcohol) solution at 5–15 wt%; the poly(vinyl alcohol) increases machine-speed wet tack but can shorten shelf life if the final pH drops below 3.5. The product is pumped with progressive cavity or diaphragm pumps rather than centrifugal pumps to reduce foam generation in recirculating coating pans.

For wood assembly or furniture lamination, the dispersion may be evaluated according to EN 204 for non-structural wood adhesives or EN 205 for shear strength, but the primary commercial application remains paper, packaging, and PVC flooring lamination. The dispersion is not recommended for continuous immersion service because the vinyl acetate repeat units are hydrolytically sensitive under prolonged wet alkaline conditions. When the target substrate is plasticized PVC, the ethylene comonomer reduces plasticizer migration into the adhesive interface, but the formulated adhesive must still pass the relevant flooring adhesive endurance test under EN 14259. The selection of wetting agent and defoamer is formulation-specific; silicone-based defoamers at 0.05–0.2 wt% and acetylene-diol wetting agents at 0.1–0.3 wt% are common starting points, but compatibility should be confirmed by oven-aging the formulated dispersion for 14 days at 40 °C before production-scale trial.
